Walgreen's

I am a little bit grumpy about Walgreen's today. When I bought three bottles of Listerine there awhile ago I used two manufacture coupons and one register rewards. (Click here to see post) Today I went to buy two packages of diapers and had two manufacture coupons to go with them and I was not able to use any register rewards towards the purchase.

I guess it is a lesson learned for next time. Register Rewards are treated as manufacture coupons and Walgreen's won't let you use both on an item.

If you got a good deal at Walgreen's this week tell me about it, leave a comment.

Cereal coupons

You can print the following $1.00 off coupons from the coupon printer on the top left. They are good until the end of May. I would print now, before they reach the print limit and are gone.

Rice Krispies Cereal - 10 oz or larger any flavor
Special K - 11.4 oz or larger, any flavor
Corn Pops - 9.2 oz or larger, any flavor
Froot Loops - 11 oz or larger, any flavor
Kellogg's Mini-Wheats- 14.5 oz or larger, any flavor
Frosted Flakes
Raisin Bran
Apple Jacks

These are awesome coupons because you only have to buy one box of cereal to get $1.00 off. Most cereal coupons are 2 or 3 boxes of cereal for $1.00 off. If you want to print two coupons of each cereal you may need to close and reopen my blog to be able to print the second round of coupons.

Coupons - list

Starting in January I began a spread sheet of the coupons I received in the Sunday paper. This helps me to match up coupons with the grocery stores ads. I started this for me and I have decided to post it for everyone.

Click coupons on the menu bar to see the list.

When I started I did not include most medicines, because I generally buy the generic or store brands. This week I decided to start including them in my coupon list. Walgreen's will occasionally have a really good deal on some name brand medicines.

There are some coupons I still don't keep track of, for instance pet food/supplies. We don't have a pet so I don't use those coupons, but if you do and would like me to start including those coupons on my list (or any other coupon not on my list) leave me a comment.

Coupons -where to find them and other info.

Coupons
Coupons are an added bonus to the Weekly Deals. You don't have to use coupons to save money and build your food storage. I use coupons, so if you would like to combine coupons with the Weekly Deals, this is how I do it!

The best place to get manufacture coupons is from the newspaper. I subscribe to The Denver Post and get the paper daily for less than $5.00 a month. I use more than $5.00 worth of coupons every month, so for me it is worth clipping coupons. King Soopers and some of the Safeway stores double manufacture coupons all the time, up to $1.00. Albertson's will have promotion periods when they will double, triple, quadruple manufacture coupons up to $1.00. I will note on the Weekly Deals if Albertson's is doubling manufacture coupons.

The coupons that come in the Sunday Paper are: (Code on Weekly Deals list):

Smart Source (SS) -every week
Red Plum (RP) - every week
Proctor and Gamble (PG) -comes once a month

On Occasion there will be a Sunday paper with no coupons. Sometimes the Wednesday paper will have the same coupon inserts has the Sunday paper.

You need to organize your coupons. Here are some tips:

1. Write the date you received the coupons in the newspaper. If I get coupons in the Wednesday paper I will write Wed. and Sun. dates because they are the same coupons.

2. I organize my coupons by month. I put all coupon inserts into one folder each month. I will clip coupons that I know I will most likely use like diaper, baby wipes, cereal, etc... These I keep organized in a coupon pocket book in my purse. See tip #5.

3. Know the common coupon codes. If there is an item on the Weekly Deals list that has a coupon to go with it, I will have the SS, RP, or PG with the date of when it was in the newspaper. This will help you to quickly find and clip coupons. If you see MC that is manufacture coupon.

4. Internet coupons. I have recently began using Internet coupons. I have recently used Internet coupons to buy Huggies Diapers, after coupons I paid $2.00 (gentle care, jumbo pack) and $5.00 (natural fit, jumbo pack). Last week I used Internet coupons to buy five, 1 lb Challenge butter for $.99 each.
See the coupon bar on the top left of my blog. If I find a good deal and it has a Internet coupon to match it I will note it in the Weekly Deals.
I will only print out coupons if it something I regularly buy. If you wait to print the coupons, the coupon may hit its print limit and be gone. I keep my printed coupons in my coupon pocket book. See tip #5.
5. Organize your coupons for your purse. I like to keep my coupons in my purse. I have a coupon pocket book that is divided into categories. I will clip coupons from the inserts that I routinely buy and I organize them in my pocket book.
Starting in the back I have this pocket book organized in the following categories:
Household items, diapers, hygiene items, basically anything you can't eat.
Pillsbury - I always cut out the crescent coupons
Betty Crocker - fruit snacks, frosting, cake/brownie mixes
General Mills - Cereal, quaker coupons I put in this pocket too.
Kellogg's - cereal coupons, pop tarts
Dairy-Juice - yoplait yogurt, apple juice,
Pasta or Sides - apple sauce coupons, rice-a roni, etc...
Baking- CH sugar coupons, butter, oil
Grocery Store- rain checks, I like to keep my rain checks and any coupons I can combine with them in this pocket.
"target"- I keep coupons in here of items I plan to buy at Target or Walmart
FEB- a pocket for a current grocery list with coupons that go with the list
Next Shopping Trip- a pocket for a current grocery list with coupons that go with the list
This has been a good system for me. I am able to keep coupons with me all the time for the items I buy most at the store.

If you have any questions about using coupons please leave a comment or email me at simplysavingcolorado @ gmail .com (remove spaces before sending the email.)

Weekly Deals April 29 May 5

Click on Coupons on the menu bar to see a list of available coupons from the newspaper. Since January 2009 I have been keeping track of coupons that come in the Denver newspaper. Tomorrow I will post more information about coupons, but the list is available now to help with your grocery planning this week!

Albertson's
With the ads today I received two coupons. $5.00 off a $25.00 purchase and $10.00 off a $50.00 purchase. These coupons are only good at the Lafayette & Northglenn Albertson's stores.

Using these coupons combined with the Procter $ Gamble promotion $5.00 off when you buy $25.00 participating items could make some really good or great deals. All Albertson's stores in Colorado have the Procter & Gamble promotion.

Here are some good/great deals with Albertson's Procter & Gamble Sale $5.00 of $25.00 purchase and $5 or $10 off purchase coupons. (only good at Lafayette & Northglenn stores)

Tide 64 load - sale price $10.99

FINAL PRICE: $22.97 for 3 or $7.67 ea.

Leave me a comment if you figure out a good deal with the Procter and Gamble products. I tried to figure out the Pampers Diapers ($19.99) and Wipes ($2.50) out for a good deal, but kept coming under the $25.00 and could not use the additional $5.00 off coupon. The beginning sale prices are not good deals.

Shopping Trip 8

King Soopers and Albertson's
I got my first reusable shopping bag and it was FREE!
Some stores will give you a credit on your purchase if you bring in your own reusable shopping bags. If you use reusable shopping bags tell me about it --leave a comment. If you know which stores do give you a credit for bringing your own bags let me know.

I did go to two stores this week for my groceries and the deals were awesome! I menu plan for two weeks at a time and so my grocery trips this week were simply to get milk, fresh produce and any great deals.

Albertson's

Reusable Shopping bag - free! The other week my Albertson's receipt had an offer for a free bag if I completed a phone survey.

Walgreen's April 26- May 2

Click Walgreen's on the menu bar for information about Walgreen's savings programs and rebates.

Rebates and Easy Saver Coupons can be found in the Easy Saver Catalog in store, by the weekly ads. (There is not one for this week)

7 day coupons (7dc)- are found in the weekly Walgreen's ad

MC = Manufacture coupon

SS = Smart Source and date found in paper

RP= Red Plum and date found in paper

RR=Register Rewards that can be used on your next shopping order.

Register Rewards is another way to receive discounts on the products you buy at Walgreen's. Other blogs will tell you your getting an item free or for a really great deal, but really you are paying for the item and getting an in-store coupon to use on your next purchase. You can use this to your advantage. See the scenario below chart:

Walgreen'sPriceCouponsFinal Price
Nivea Body Wash$4.99MC $1.00 RP 4-19$3.99 + RR $4.99
Rembrandt toothpaste 2.6 or 3 oz or Mouthwash 16 oz$5.99$5.99 +$5.99 RR
Bayer Quick Release Crystals$2.49$2.49 + $2.49 RR

Dove Deodarant$1.997DC limit 3 MC $1.00 RP 3-15$.99

The first three items could be good deals if you are planning on buying other items at Walgreen's. For instance if I bought Huggie Diapers or Pull-ups this week they are 2 jumbo packs for $20.00 + $2.00 RR. First I would buy the Nivea Body Wash, Rembrandt mouthwash, and Bayer in a seperate transaction to receive $13.47 in RR that I would use in the second transaction to buy the diapers.

Final Price(before tax): $16.03 for the following + earn $2.00 RR

2 packages of Huggie Diapers (use 2 MC coupons $1.50 SS 4-19)
Nivea Body Wash
Remrbandt mouthwash
Bayer Quick Release gels 4 pack

Do not feed the mice!

If you work hard to find great deals on food and buy in bulk, don't let it turn into mouse food!
Last November we got our first mouse in the basement. Unfortunately, I did not have a lot of my food stored properly. The mouse had a great feast of eating into my 10 lb bag of pancake mix, my Costco size bag chocolate chips, and some hot chocolate mixes (it must have been a girl mouse.) I was mad that I had to throw away all the food just because a mouse nibbled on some of it. Before we lost any more food to mice we went and bought these storage containers to protect our food. The buckets below store my flour, sugars, rice, and a misc. one that I put an unopened bag of pancake mix, hot cocoa mix, etc.. . A good friend taught me to store my chocolate chips in the freezer, they will last longer and give the cookie dough a little chill before you cook them. (The "chill" helps the flour absorb into the dough.)
We recently caught another mouse in the basement and I am happy to report the only food he got into was the food left on the trap!

Coupons - Safeway Doubling

Email:
I noticed in your blog that you mentioned that Safeway will double coupons. I called the Safeway in Greeley and they said they don't double coupons. Is the doubling on certain days or during certain sales?

All the Safeway stores I have visited between Broomfield and Thornton do double coupons. I just talked to customer service at Safeway and not all Safeway stores in Colorado double coupons. If you are going to use coupons at Safeway call ahead or ask at Customer service before you shop. Thanks for your email.

This week I went to Walmart and did price matching on the ads. Minute Maid Orange Juice (64 oz): $1.50 ea. (Albertson's)
Cheetos 10.25 oz: Walmart price $2.00 price matched $1.67 (Albertson's)
Nabisco Crackers: Walmart price $2.00 price matched $1.69 (Safeway) - MC $1.00 buy 2 Final Price $1.17 ea
Kraft Salad Dressing 16 oz: Walmart price $1.58 price matched $1.50(Albertson's) - MC $1.50 Final Price: FREE
Kraft Mayonnaise 32 oz: Walmart price more than $3.00 price matched $1.50 (Albertson's) -MC $1.00 buy 2 Final Price: $1.00 ea

Since Walmart does not double coupons, I went into King Soopers to get this deal:
Cereal $2.77 each buy 3 get free milk.
Cereal Total: $8.31 - MC $1.00-MC $1.00 = Final Price for all cereal and milk: $6.31 or $1.26 ea.
The Cheerios are 9 oz and the Cinnamon Toast Crunch is 12.6 oz
Milk was on sale for $1.99 a gallon.

I took the last three cereals off the shelf and I did ask if they had any more in the store and was told they were out. Tuesday is when the store will restock so try then if you want this deal.
Be sure to print off coupons for the cereal from the coupon printer on the top left.

I planned on buying 2 boxes of Cinnamon Toast Crunch (had two Internet coupons), but they only had one on the shelf. I only printed one Cheerios coupon, so I could have saved another $1.00 if I had printed off two coupons.

Are you READY?

What do I pack Summer vs. Winter time for clothes in our emergency packs?

To keep things simply I try to keep the same things in my packs for summer and winter. For clothing the key is layering. I do keep short-sleeved shirts, pants (plus shorts for the kids), socks, underwear, and a sweatshirt for everyone. I also included long sleeved shirts in the adult packs, but our clothes are easier to do since we don't grow out of them every year. For the kids I purchase clearance clothing a size bigger than they currently wear. For the adults I have put in clothes that fit, but that we don't wear anymore. We might not be stylish in an emergency, but we will have clean clothes that fit!

Are you READY? (water)

You need to store 1 gallon of water per person per day.

For a three day (72 hour) period you would need 3 gallons per person. This is the least amount of water you should store, if possible try to store enough water for a 2 week time period.

You will be using the water for drinking, cooking, hygiene, etc.. You may be using stored water to help flush toilets in your home in an emergency and the water has been shut off. I think it is best to store water in a variety of small and large containers. I like to have some cases of bottled water, so if we were to be evacuated we could throw some water in the back of the van and go. Bottled water is expensive to store compared to using your own tap water and plastic containers. I have included websites below that give instructions on how to safely clean and prepare used plastic containers to store water safely.

For information about storing water safely visit these websites:
(just click on the name)

Are you READY?

The first weekend in April and the first weekend of October I go through our emergency 72 hour kits to update and rotate clothing and food items. We're READY! Are you?For information about being prepared in an emergency visit these websites:
